Understand the existing deck

The visible surface is only part of the assessment. Remaining timber thickness, joints, attachment and the condition underneath can affect the appropriate repair. Photographs are useful for an initial discussion, but inspection may be necessary.

Compare a defined scope

A repair proposal and a full renewal proposal are not directly comparable unless their boundaries are clear. Discuss removal, underlying repairs, fittings, materials, joints and finishing requirements. Avoid choosing only on the visible finish or a headline price.

Coordinate adjacent work

Painting, fittings and access routes can interact with deck work. Agree the sequence and responsibility for removing and reinstalling equipment. Material availability and application conditions can influence the programme.

Discuss future care

Ask for care information appropriate to the chosen materials and products. Maintenance expectations should be part of the material discussion before work begins.
